North Pier

Opened on 21 May 1863 the North Pier is the oldest and longest of Blackpool’s three piers.  It cost £11, 740 to build and was opened by Mayor Preston.  It is a Grade II listed building and is the oldest surviving pier designed and created by Eugenius Birch.

The pier was damaged in 1867 by wreckage from Nelson’s former flagship, the Foudroyant which had been moored off the pier for an exhibition.  In the 1870’s the pier-head was enlarged and the Indian Pavilion and bandstand were built.  There were futher ship collisions with the pier in 1892 and 1897.

The Indian Pavailion was destroyed by fire in 1921, but a new pavilion was built, unfortunately also destroyed by fire in 1938.

The pier today is home to the magnificent traditional carousel ride, carousel bar, the sun lounge, it even has it’s own little tram which can transport you to the end of the pier.

Central Pier

Blackpool’s Central Pier home to the Big Wheel, Pirates Bay and the number 1 tribute show Kings and Queen.

Situated right in the very heart of Blackpool Central Pier has something for everyone.  With rides galore, game stalls, cafes and arcades you’ll never get bored.

When the pier was opened on 30 May 1868, it was 503 yards in length, 131 yards of which was a landing jetty for use at low tide. The first manager of the pier was Robert Bickerstaffe, coxswain of the first Blackpool lifeboat. Blackpool’s lifeboat station is located next to Central Pier.

The pier has suffered relatively little damage save for fires in 1964 and 1973 which gutted the theatre buildings. The main structural alterations have been the removal of the obsolete 131 yards (120 m) low tide jetty in 1975 and the construction of the Ferris wheel in 1990. The addition of the wheel required the midsection of the pier to be strengthened to cope with the extra weight.

South Pier

The Blackpool South Shore Pier & Pavilion Co. Ltd. was registered in November 1890 and work began to build the pier in 1892. It was constructed, at a total cost of £50,000, using a different method than that used for North and Central piers, the Worthington Screwpile System. It opened, with a choir, two brass bands and an orchestra on Good Friday, 1893. The 3,000 capacity Grand Pavilion opened on 20 May. At 163 yards (149 m) long, it was the shortest of the three piers, and had 36 shops, a bandstand, an ice-cream vendor and a photograph stall. It was built shorter and wider than North and Central piers to accommodate pavilion.

Today South Pier is home to Games Stalls, cafes, shops and kiosks as well as the Laughing Donkey Family Bar.  It’s also home to Adrenalin Zone which includes Sky Screamer and Sky Coaster, dare you ride them?

Stanley Park

The Grade II listed park is spread out of 390 acres opening in 1926 it’s easy to see why Stanley Park was voted the best.

Stanley Park is a leafy escape from the noise and hectic way of life in Blackpool, take a steady walk around the lake and watch the local wildlife entertain you or just while away the hours meandering through the Italian Gardens or the memorial garden, find a shady spot under one of the many different species of tree and just relax or if you fancy it you could always take out one of the motor boats for a sail round the lake.

Lowther Gardens

Situated near the Green and front of Lytham, Lowther Gardens were laid out in 1873 by Lytham Squire John Talbot Clifton and were given to the town of Lytham in 1905.

The gardens are the oldest in Lytham St Annes and have changed over the years, tennis courts, play area and sports pavillion have all be added.  The bowling greens have been improved along with the beautiful herbaceous border.

This beautiful leafy park is a must for anyone to visit.  The gorgeous Lily pond is awash with pink and white Lillies through the latter summer months.  The landscaped gardens are full of wildlife, birds and butterflies just waiting to be discovered.

Lytham Windmill

Lytham windmill has stood on the green since 1805 when it was built by the Squire of Lytham.

The original design of the windmill did not have the plinth around the bottom, this was added some 10 years later as a way of stopping people and animals getting too close to the sails.  It also helped the miller to adjust the cap and the sailcloths.

Many improvements and renovations have been made to the windmill over the years and it has had many uses in the past including an electricty board sub station, now it is used as a museum.

Why not take a look if you’re in Lytham.
